In the ever-changing housing market, young consumers in the UK face many challenges in managing their living spaces. Recent research that we conducted as a self storage provider revealed young consumers’ increasing demand for self storage solutions. Various factors have influenced this trend, including rising mortgage rates and accumulating sentimental and seasonal items.

The Space Crunch Facing Young UK Consumers

Our survey of 500 consumers shows that many young UK consumers need more living space. 81% of Millennials and Gen Z respondents say they need more space at home. Almost half [49%] find it hard to fit sentimental items in their homes. Many also need help storing seasonal goods like holiday decorations and off-season clothing, which 52% of young consumers say adds to their cluttered living spaces.

The Impact of Economic Factors

The research shows how the overall economy affects the self storage industry. As mortgage rates go up, impacting 28% of young consumers, and the cost of living affects 51%, more people are choosing self storage instead of moving to larger homes. 24% of survey participants said they downsized their homes and now use self storage to protect their extra belongings.

The Importance of Proximity, Price, and Security

Young consumers in the UK highly value three main factors when choosing a self-storage provider: 68% prioritise proximity to their homes, 82.9% consider price necessary, and 51.8% emphasise security. These preferences highlight the importance of self storage options that offer convenient access and provide secure and affordable ways to manage their belongings.

Regional Variations in Space Constraints

Our research also uncovers differences in the need for more space experienced by young consumers in different regions. It was found that 66% of participants living in London expressed a need for more space in their homes, whereas the percentage decreased to 47% for those living in Yorkshire. This indicates that the self storage requirement might be more urgent in specific urban areas where housing expenses and space constraints are more significant.

Household Size and Space Requirements

Interestingly, the research found that despite 56.6% of consumers requiring more space in their homes, only 16.9% of respondents lived in properties with four or more people. In contrast, 41.9% resided in households with two people and 22% in households with three people. This underscores the complex interplay between household size, living space, and the need for self storage solutions.

The Rise of Self Storage as a Solution

Self storage has become a popular solution for young consumers dealing with limited living space. Our research suggests that self storage has become a growing need for young consumers to declutter their homes and free up much-needed space. Using secure and cost-effective storage units, they can protect sentimental items, seasonal belongings, and other possessions that do not fit their current living spaces.
