So, you’ve finally decided to put some furniture into self storage. Maybe you’re in between houses, giving a room a full makeover, or just desperately trying to reclaim some breathing space at home. Whatever the reason you’re probably wondering the same thing most people do before they book a unit “Is my stuff actually going to be okay in there?”
It’s a totally fair question. Furniture isn’t cheap, and some of it carries more than just a price tag, there’s the dining table that’s been in the family for years, the sofa you saved up for, or the wardrobe that somehow survived three house moves. You want to know it’s going to come out the other side in the same condition it went in.
The good news? With the right preparation and the right storage provider, it absolutely can. Here’s everything you need to know before you start loading the van.
Is Self Storage Actually Safe for Furniture
Let’s address the big one straight away. Is self storage safe? In short yes, when you choose a reputable facility with proper security measures in place.
At Ready Steady Store, every store is fitted with 24-hour CCTV monitoring, unit access controls, and app-controlled access. Some of our locations even offer smart lock technology through the Ready Steady Store App. Our security features have been designed above the standards set by the UK Self Storage Association, so you’re not just getting the bare minimum.
When comparing providers, here’s what to look out for:
- 24-hour CCTV ideally monitored both during and outside office hours
- App-based access rather than a generic shared key
- Good lighting throughout corridors and access points
- A clean, dry environment essential for protecting wooden and fabric furniture

Self Storage Contents Protection: What You Need to Know
Here’s something that catches a lot of people off guard, your home contents protection may not automatically cover belongings held in a storage unit. Some policies do extend to cover items in storage, but many don’t, or they only cover them for a limited time. Before you assume you’re protected, it’s worth picking up the phone and checking with your insurer.
At Ready Steady Store, a Contents Protection Plan is mandatory for all customers and that’s not us being awkward, it’s us making sure your things are genuinely covered. Our plan is provided by Gallagher & Co., specialists in self storage insurance and affiliates of the Self Storage Association UK. It’s a new for old policy, which means if something gets damaged or lost, it’s replaced with a new item of similar quality not a depreciated payout.
The cost of the plan is based on the total value of what you’re storing, so you only pay for the level of cover you actually need. You can read the full details on our Contents Protection Plan page or check our FAQs if you have specific questions about what’s covered.
Quick tip – Before you pack anything up, take photos of your furniture from multiple angles. This gives you a clear record of condition if you ever need to make a claim.
The Best Way to Prepare Furniture for Storage
Getting your furniture into storage safely is just as important as the unit itself. A little preparation goes a long way, and it can be the difference between your pieces coming out pristine versus coming out with scratches, damp patches, or worse. Our full guide to wrapping furniture for storage covers the detail, but here are the key steps:
- Clean everything thoroughly first – any dirt, crumbs, or moisture left on furniture can cause real damage over time including mould on fabric, staining on wood, or unwanted visitors of the four-legged variety. Make sure everything is completely dry before wrapping.
- Disassemble where you can – flat-pack bed frames, remove sofa legs, take drawers out of chests. Keep all screws and fixings in a labelled bag taped directly to the item they belong to.
- Wrap properly – use furniture blankets, bubble wrap, or stretch wrap for corners and edges. Avoid wrapping upholstery too tightly in plastic, which can trap moisture and cause mildew.
- Choose the right unit size – too small and you’ll damage furniture forcing it in. Use our free Size Estimator before you book or call our team for advice.

How to Pack a Storage Unit Properly
Once you’re at the unit, how you organise things matters. Here’s how to make the most of the space and keep everything protected. For even more detail, take a look at our ultimate guide to storing furniture and our top 10 storage and packing tips.
- Cover the floor with thick plastic sheeting, if possible, it protects against residual moisture and makes it easier to slide items around later
- Work back to front and put items you’re least likely to need closest to the back wall, and keep regularly needed things near the door
- Use the height as our units are at least 8ft tall, so stack carefully with heavier items at the bottom
- Leave an aisle if you have space as it will allow you to move around your unit without unpacking everything makes life a lot easier
- Draw a simple map of what’s where, sounds unnecessary until you’re searching for one specific chair cushion three months later
