How to make moving house easier – a moving house checklist to help:
Moving house is an exciting time for everyone involved, but there’s a lot to do and plenty to get stuck into before the big day arrives. With so much to do in a short amount of time, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and uncertain about where to begin. Don’t worry though – we’re here to reduce some stress by offering some guidance. Keep this moving house checklist to hand and you’ll know exactly what your next step is.
You need to declutter before moving day
When you start to think about moving into a new house, inevitably you’ll begin to appreciate just how much stuff you actually have! Now is the perfect time to declutter and get rid of things you don’t need or want to take with you to your new home. This will make everything easier on the day and can save you money.
- Removal companies charge by the time and the amount of belongings you have
- If you are planning to put goods into storage, house storage solutions will usually charge by the size of unit you need for your goods.
- Moving some items into self storage yourself in advance will allow you breathing space to wait until you are settled to decide what works in your new home, and what you would prefer to sell or give away.
A guide to packing
Moving into a new house is one of the most stressful things we do during our lives – and one of the biggest causes of that stress is packing. Is it really any surprise when you must get the entire contents of one house into another? It doesn’t matter whether the move is taking you down the road, to a new postcode or overseas, it is no small task.
So, with that in mind, here are some packing tips that should make the process of moving house into a new house a lot easier and eliminate much of the stress that comes with packing up your entire life.
So, you go to start packing when it dawns on you… what are we going to pack it all in? This is not a problem you want to have at the last minute because it will delay the process and cause an awful amount of stress as you run around trying to find boxes and anything else you can get your hands on.
Instead, start building up a collection of boxes as soon as you know you are moving – ask friends, family and colleagues – even ask at the supermarket and save any that come your way.
You can buy them online too, if you want to, Ready Steady Store sell boxes and packaging materials to help you stay organised – our boxes are strong and can be delivered to your door click here to browse our selection Box Shop
Start packing early…
The earlier you start packing, the easier it will be. The last thing you want to do is leave it until the weekend before and then find yourself running around in a panic just throwing things into boxes. Not only is this stressful during the packing process, it will also make the unpacking process much harder. Start packing early and you can make sure your belongings are organised. Take it a room at a time and begin with the items you don’t use on a day-to-day basis, working your way towards the essentials.
Don’t pack what you don’t need
There is no point wasting your time and energy moving the items that you don’t really need. So, now is the time to get rid of the clutter. As you start to pack, sort through everything and create three piles – one for the rubbish, one for the items you can donate to charity, and the final one for the bits you can sell. You will do a good deed, earn yourself a few pennies to put towards your new home, and have less to move as well as plenty of space and organisation.
Label everything!
Make sure you label all your boxes – not only with the room that they destined for, but listing contents of the box as well. This may seem to make the packing process longer, but it will make the unpacking process much easier – perfect when all you want is to be settled into your new place.
Use storage to start the process and make it simpler
Our storage units are the perfect place to store your belongings before, during and even after moving. You can start moving those non-essential items out early, have somewhere to fall back on should anything go wrong on moving day, and you can leave items here to enable you to start decorating before the house is full of furniture, ornaments and the rest.
Pack a moving day “essentials” box
Don’t forget to pack one box which has all the essentials you may need on moving day. This could include cleaning products to use as you leave the old house and enter the new one, and the kettle and mugs, of course! The last thing you want is to be searching through boxes when you are gasping for a cup of tea…
House Moving Day
It’s taken ages, but finally it’s the day you are moving home. It’s often a stressful day with calls to agents and solicitors, and last minute packing and cleaning.
Here are some tips and essentials to make Moving House day easier:
Have a box or a suitcase to hand during the move in process, to make sure you have the things you will undoubtably need in one easy to find place.
There are things you should have in an easy-to-access suitcase or box that stays with you throughout the moving process. It’s the last thing to be packed and the first thing you should open when you reach your new home. These are the essentials for your moving day survival kit.
Documents and Paperwork
Keep your paperwork for the move in/move out in a file, so that you know who to call if there are any problems or emergencies.
Valuables
For peace of mind keep your valuables with you at all times during the move, whether its money, jewellery, important documentation or items of sentimental value.
Chargers
Make you sure you have chargers for your phone, computer or any other device you might need so that you can plug them in as soon as you get to your new home. A battery pack is a good idea for your home, to make sure you are contactable all day.
Moving often requires a lot of paperwork, and you don’t want to spend precious time scrounging through boxes looking for your moving contract or other homeowner paperwork if there’s an emergency. Keep any documents you need with your moving day survival kit, so they are easily accessible.
Kettle, Cups and Tea
This needs no explanation! You might want some biscuits too 🙂
Toiletries
Sometimes you end up getting into your new home very late, easy access to some soap, toothbrush and toothpaste is really handy – and make sure you know where the box with towels and sheets is.
Toilet Paper
Please don’t forget this!
Medicines
If you or anyone in the family is on medication, it is advisable to make sure you have access to this. Some paracetamol can also be useful…
